A chromolithographed tobacco label from the 1870s names Black Hawk, the Sauk chief (1767-1838), and pairs his name with a horse, a combination that signals how the brand hoped to sell itself. Black Hawk led Sauk and Fox resistance in the Black Hawk War of 1832 in Illinois and Wisconsin. After his capture he toured eastern cities, and he died in 1838 in Iowa. Tobacco makers often borrowed the names of famous figures to give their products a bold, outdoorsy image, so the label reveals as much about 1870s advertising as it does about the chief himself. The copyright notation indicates the design was registered under federal copyright law.
