Black Eagle, a Nez Perce man, appears here in strict profile, a pose Edward S. Curtis favored for its clean outline and for the clothing it displayed. Made around 1905, the portrait comes from the Curtis collection at the Library of Congress, assembled during the years Curtis was building his multivolume study *The North American Indian*. Curtis often posed sitters in traditional dress against plain backdrops, so the image records Nez Perce clothing of the period while also reflecting the photographer's deliberate choices.
