Edward S. Curtis made this profile portrait of PioPio-Maksmaks, a Walla Walla sitter, with the face turned to the side so that features and dress stand out clearly. The photograph dates to about 1905 and was later published as plate 268 in volume 8 of *The North American Indian*, Curtis's multivolume survey issued in Seattle between 1907 and 1930. Curtis often asked his sitters to wear clothing he considered traditional, so the record's emphasis on dress is worth noting. The image preserves an individual's appearance from a period when Walla Walla life was changing quickly under settlement and reservation policy.
