Few pictures on this board name their sitter as directly as this one, which is titled with the name PioPio-Maksmaks and identifies him as a Walla Walla man in the clothing of his people. Edward S. Curtis made the portrait around 1905 as part of his effort to record Native American life in the early twentieth century, and it was later published as plate 267 in the eighth supplemental volume of *The North American Indian*. Curtis often posed his subjects in traditional dress, sometimes with studio settings and borrowed garments, so the image reflects his editorial choices as much as everyday life. The Walla Walla are a Sahaptin-speaking people of the Columbia Plateau in southeastern Washington and northeastern Oregon.
