Chino is the name given for this sitter in Edward S. Curtis's c1903 portrait series, cataloged as Curtis number 135. The record does not give a tribal affiliation or a location, so the portrait has to be read through the image and the name alone. Curtis made pictures like this while working on *The North American Indian*, a twenty-volume project published between 1907 and 1930 that aimed to document Native peoples across the continent. Many of his portraits were carefully posed and lit, and today viewers often consider how that style shaped the way his subjects appear.
