Sitting Eagle, a Crow man, appears here in the dress and regalia that Edward S. Curtis recorded around 1905 during his fieldwork among Plains peoples. Curtis was assembling the portraits that would become *The North American Indian*, a multivolume survey published from 1907 onward with photogravure plates. The record's focus on clothing and dress reflects his aim of documenting traditional attire, so the textiles, ornaments and posture are worth studying closely. Viewers should also keep in mind that Curtis posed and framed his sitters according to his own ideas of an authentic past.
