Few portraits of Sitting Bull from this period name a ceremonial object as part of the subject, and this card's record lists a calumet, or pipe, alongside him. The card was photographed and published by Palmquist & Jurgens of St. Paul, Minnesota, around 1884, a few years after Sitting Bull surrendered in 1881. Studios like this one sold cabinet cards widely in the 1880s, so images such as this reached many viewers who never met the Hunkpapa Lakota leader. His fame had grown after the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn, and portraits from these years were widely copied.
