John P. Clum, then in his early twenties, served as Indian agent at the San Carlos Agency in eastern Arizona Territory, and this 1875 photograph shows him posing with two Apache men, Diablo and Eskiminzin. Eskiminzin was a leader of Aravaipa Apache people who had survived the 1871 Camp Grant massacre, which makes his presence at the agency a notable part of the picture's history. The U.S. Army Signal Corps made the original photograph, and this print is a gelatin silver copy made between 1930 and 1960, so its tones reflect later printing practice as well as the 1870s.
