Beneath a stand of oaks, this camp scene stands apart from many of the domestic views Edward S. Curtis made around 1903. The shade of the trees gives the dwellings a sheltered look. Curtis was then deep into his long project to document Native American life across the West, and he often arranged subjects and structures to show daily routines and traditional building methods. This print is catalogued as number 128 in his series and was registered for copyright, a reminder that his photographs served both as records and as published work. Today, such pictures are useful for seeing how camps were built and how families lived, though they also reflect the photographer's choices about what to show.
