Weasel Tail, a Piegan man, is shown here in a headdress and holding a tomahawk, both of which the record lists among the picture's subjects. Edward S. Curtis made the portrait around 1900, during the years he was building his large survey of Native peoples of North America. It later appeared as plate 203 in volume six of *The North American Indian*. The Piegan, or Piikani, were part of the Blackfeet Confederacy on the northern Plains, in what is now Montana and Alberta. Curtis often posed sitters in traditional regalia and with period props, so today's viewers read such images both as records of dress and as carefully composed studio work.
