Spotted Tail, a Brulé Lakota leader, is the subject of this numbered color card from a series of advertising cards featuring American Indian chiefs. The catalog files him under Dakota Indians, but his people were Brulé Lakota, and he led them through the late 1800s, a period of broken treaties and confinement to reservations. He was killed in 1881 near the Rosebud Agency. The subject headings also include smokeless tobacco, a sign that the card was made to sell tobacco rather than to record his life.
