Few visitors to the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis forgot the Patagonian village, where people from the Tehuelche region of southern South America lived in view of the crowds. This card shows a family group in front of a tent of sheepskin hides, a dwelling that was meant to look authentic. The "race of giants" wording was showmanship. Visitors were tall by the standards of the day, and fair organizers and promoters built an exhibit around that novelty, which tells us as much about early twentieth-century ethnological displays as it does about the people pictured.
