Geronimo, the Chiricahua Apache leader who had resisted U.S. military campaigns in the Southwest, is the subject of this 1904 print made at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. By then he was a prisoner of war, held by the U.S. Army for more than two decades, and he was a popular attraction at fairs, where visitors could see him in traditional dress. The picture reflects how the exposition's displays turned Native people into exhibits for public entertainment, a practice that shaped how many Americans understood indigenous identity. The print later appeared in the exhibition *Only Skin Deep* at the International Center for Photography.
