The title links this portrait to Geronimo, the Bedonkohe Apache leader who resisted U.S. military campaigns for decades before surrendering in 1886 and spending the rest of his life as a prisoner of war. Edward S. Curtis made the image around 1904 for *The North American Indian*, his multivolume effort to record Native peoples through portraits and ethnographic detail at a time when many communities faced heavy pressure from federal policy. Curtis often posed his sitters in traditional dress against carefully arranged backgrounds, so the picture shows his artistic choices as much as everyday life.
