The sitter, identified only as Running Rabbit, holds a staff and wears clothing that places the portrait among Edward S. Curtis's studies of Native men around 1900. Curtis made such images for his multivolume work *The North American Indian*, which began appearing in 1907. His posed sitters often wore dress the photographer considered traditional, and his staged settings reflected his own ideas about vanishing customs as much as everyday life. The print is catalogued as Curtis number 55 in the Library of Congress collection.
