This portrait shows Curley, a Crow man whose name is paired with the older spelling "Apsaroke" in the title, which is the tribe's own name for itself rendered by nineteenth-century writers. Edward S. Curtis made it around 1905, during the years he was documenting Plains and Plateau peoples for his multivolume work *The North American Indian*. Curley is best known as a Crow scout who accompanied Custer's column in 1876, and his later account of that campaign has made him a figure of interest to historians of the Little Bighorn. Curtis's sitters were often posed in traditional dress, so the picture also reflects his approach to the subject as much as the person himself.
