Denver in 1909 was a railroad and mining city of about 200,000 people, built on Colorado's gold and silver and on the stockyards and packing plants along its north side. Mayor Robert Speer had championed a City Beautiful program for several years, promoting parks, boulevards and a planned civic center, and public halls like this one fit that effort to give residents places to gather. Crowds came to these rooms for concerts, lectures, vaudeville and political rallies, while the Elitch Gardens theater drew summer audiences on the city's west side. Many visitors also arrived for the dry climate, since Denver had long been known as a place where people with tuberculosis went to recover.
