Denver in 1915 was a city of about 213,000 people, the figure the 1910 census recorded, and its downtown was filling with office buildings, hotels, and streetcar lines. Its new Union Station, which opened in 1914, gave the railroads a grand gateway, and rail lines still tied the capital to coal fields, smelters, and farms across Colorado. The labor conflict in the southern coalfields had turned violent in April 1914, when the Ludlow massacre killed miners and their families during a long strike against Rockefeller-controlled coal companies. Denver residents followed those events closely, and the argument over union organizing and the mine owners' power spilled into the city's newspapers and political halls. Anyone looking over the downtown skyline that year would have seen a prosperous commercial center still wrestling with questions about labor and its place in local politics.
