Hell Canyon and the Fair Glacier appear in this 1921 Colorado panorama, a year when the state's economy still leaned heavily on mining, cattle, and farming, while mountain scenery was drawing a growing number of visitors. Rocky Mountain National Park had been established in 1915, and in the early 1920s the high country was becoming a destination for summer travelers as well as a source of timber and water. Many Coloradans of the period knew the mountains mainly through the mining camps, railroad lines, and ranches that clung to their valleys, so a view of a remote glacier and its rugged canyon would have seemed both distant and familiar. The early 1920s also brought rising automobile use and better roads, which slowly changed how people reached such places.
