In 1921 Isabelle Glacier lay in the high country west of Boulder, where tourism was steadily gaining ground on Colorado's older mining trade. Rocky Mountain National Park, established in 1915 to the north, was drawing growing crowds, and those visitors were beginning to change how Front Range residents used the peaks. Hiking and climbing groups, especially the Colorado Mountain Club founded in 1912, organized outings that brought Denver and Boulder people up to ice fields like this one. For those who remembered the shafts and tailings of the 1880s and 1890s, the glacier was becoming a destination rather than a claim. Meanwhile, Colorado's farms and towns were still adjusting to postwar prices and a weakening mining economy.
