Leadville in 1909 was a far quieter place than the boomtown of its silver years. After Congress repealed the Sherman Silver Purchase Act in 1893 and silver prices collapsed, many shafts closed and miners moved on, so the district turned toward lead, zinc, and lower-grade ores that still paid. Smelters on the edge of town and mines on the surrounding slopes kept a steady workforce, including many Cornish, Italian, and eastern European families. Churches, union halls, and fraternal lodges shaped civic life, and residents who had stayed through the bust took pride in a town that had survived its own crash.
