Yampa, in the Yampa River valley of Routt County in northwestern Colorado, was in 1909 a place where ranching and the hay and cattle economy set the rhythm of life. The valley's river, which some older settlers still called the Bear River, watered meadows that fed herds of cattle and sheep and supplied winter feed for the horses that worked the farms and ranches. Routt County's settlers were then pressing into country that had been open range only a few decades earlier, and the coming of a railroad through the mountains promised to tie local stock and produce to Denver and markets farther east. Most people in the valley would have known the place first as a working landscape of fences, hayfields, and small towns, where distance and winter weather shaped daily life.
