The Big Lost River Valley of south-central Idaho in 1909 was a young farming and ranching district, shaped by the irrigation push that followed the federal Reclamation Act of 1902. Settlers were turning sagebrush flats into hay meadows, grain fields, and pasture, and the river's water, which disappears into the lava plains below the valley, was the main concern of ranchers and their neighbors. Mining in the nearby hills and the arrival of the Oregon Short Line railroad had brought supply towns and steady traffic to the region in the years just before. Life centered on small towns, where residents gathered for church, school, county business, and the seasonal work of haying and irrigation. The view shows the valley as its residents would have recognized it: open, dry country that depended on careful management of every stream.
