Blackfoot, Idaho, in 1909 was a railroad and farming town on the Snake River Plain, grown up around the Oregon Short Line tracks that crossed southeastern Idaho in the 1880s. It had become the seat of Bingham County in 1895, so its courthouse, banks and stores served ranchers and farmers spread across the surrounding sagebrush. Irrigation canals drawn from the Snake River were turning that land into fields of grain, alfalfa and potatoes, and the town's prosperity rose and fell with crop prices and freight traffic. Residents also lived within sight of the Fort Hall Indian Reservation to the north, a reminder that the valley had been Shoshone and Bannock country long before the towns arrived.
