Blue River, Colorado, sat in the upper Blue River valley of Summit County in 1917, a mountain setting where mining had shaped local life for more than four decades. The Ten Mile Range, which rises west of the valley, held silver, lead, and gold deposits that drew prospectors and miners to camps in the district. By 1917, the United States had entered the First World War, and demand for base metals gave local operators a reason to keep working claims that had sat idle in slower years. Many surrounding communities had shrunk after the earlier mining booms faded, so the number of residents in the valley depended heavily on whether a mine or dredge was running. Life in these camps centered on the workings, the boardinghouses, and the seasonal snow that cut off mountain roads for much of the winter.
