Steamboat Springs, a ranching and timber town in the Yampa River valley of northwestern Colorado, stood at a turning point in 1909. Cattle and hay drew income from the valley's meadows, and nearby forests supplied lumber, while the hot springs that gave the town its name drew visitors who bathed in the mineral water. That year the Moffat Road's rail line was pushing through Routt County, promising the isolated valley a direct link to Denver and markets beyond the mountains. Residents who lived here would have known the town as a remote mountain outpost whose fortunes were shifting as the railroad arrived.
