Idaho Springs, Colorado, in 1903 was a mining town in the Clear Creek canyon, about 35 miles west of Denver, whose fortunes rose and fell with gold and silver ore pulled from the mountains above it. The Colorado Central and the Argentine Central railroads linked the town to Denver and to the mines, and its hot mineral springs drew visitors who came for the baths. Clear Creek County's seat of government was there, so courthouse business, saloons, and boarding houses shared the narrow streets with ore processing and the traffic of the mines. Mining operations in the district had been shaped by the silver crash of 1893, and by 1903 many owners were turning toward gold, lead, and the new reduction works. A panoramic view of the town from this period would have shown a community that depended on the canyon walls for both its wealth and its cramped space.
