Idaho Springs, Colorado, sat in a narrow canyon of Clear Creek about 35 miles west of Denver, and in 1903 its fortunes still rested on gold and silver mining in the surrounding mountains. Stamp mills and ore processing works lined the creek, and the town's population had grown with the Colorado mining boom of the 1870s and 1880s. The Colorado and Southern and Argentine Central railroads, along with the Colorado Central line, carried ore and supplies up the canyon and tourists to the hot springs that gave the town its name. Local residents knew Idaho Springs as a mining town first, though its mineral baths and mountain scenery were drawing visitors by the turn of the century.
