Mount Hyndman rises in the Pioneer Mountains of south-central Idaho, and this 1911 panorama shows a country still shaped by the silver boom of the Wood River district. By then the mining towns of Hailey and Ketchum had lost much of the crowd that came with the 1880s strikes, when the Oregon Short Line's branch brought rails and supplies up the valley. Stockmen were turning to sheep and cattle on the high summer ranges, and the mountains were valued for grazing, timber, and the water that ran down toward the Big Wood River. Idaho was also a young state, admitted in 1890, and its counties were still working out roads, schools, and water rights in a land where the mountains set the limits of every settlement.
