Nampa, Idaho, in 1907 was a young railroad town in the Boise Valley, where the Oregon Short Line had brought rail service in the 1880s and helped turn the surrounding sagebrush into farmland. Irrigation canals drawn from the Boise and Snake rivers made the valley's fields productive, and farmers shipped grain, hay, fruit, and livestock out by rail. The town's streets, churches, and businesses reflected the steady arrival of settlers who came west to take up irrigated land. For residents, Nampa was a place defined by the railroad, the canals, and the agricultural county seat life of Canyon County.
