Pioneer, a mining camp in the Boise Basin of Boise County, Idaho, sat in a country that had lived on gold since placer strikes drew crowds in the early 1860s. By 1907 the easy surface gold was largely gone, and the work that remained relied on larger operations, including hydraulic washing and the labor of men who had stayed on or moved in after the first rush. Idaho had been a state for only seventeen years, and its wider economy still rested on mining, timber, and stockmen grazing sheep and cattle, while irrigated farming in the Boise Valley was slowly expanding. Residents of a camp like Pioneer would have measured their year by the output of the claims, the condition of the roads to Idaho City and Boise, and the news of how the mines were faring.
