Stanley, Idaho, sits in the Sawtooth Valley of Custer County at the edge of the Sawtooth Range, and in 1936 it was a small mountain settlement whose economy still leaned on ranching, timber, and the summer trade of hunters and fishermen. The Great Depression had reached rural Idaho, and many families in the area depended on work from the federal government and on the seasonal rhythms of grazing and logging. The town took its name from Captain John Stanley, a soldier and explorer who had passed through the region in the 1860s, and it remained remote, with few roads and little rail service compared with the larger towns of southern Idaho. For residents, the jagged peaks behind the town were both a working landscape and a source of pride, though the mountains drew far fewer visitors than they would in later decades.
