Caldwell, Idaho, in 1907 was a young farming town in the Boise Valley, roughly 30 miles west of Boise. The Oregon Short Line railroad had reached the site in the mid-1880s, and the town grew as a shipping point for wheat, fruit, livestock, and hay raised on irrigated land. Canyon County had been organized in 1891 with Caldwell as its seat, so the courthouse, merchants, and county officials gave the streets their daily rhythm. Residents of the time would have known the town as a center of irrigated agriculture and a stop on the main line between Ogden and Portland.
