Lewiston, Idaho, and Clarkston, Washington, sit on opposite banks where the Clearwater River joins the Snake in 1921, and the two towns were tied together by bridges, ferries, and the river trade. Lewiston had been Idaho's first territorial capital, and by the early twentieth century it served as a shipping point for wheat grown on the Camas Prairie and the Palouse, hauled down steep grades to the river. Grain prices slid after the First World War, so farmers and merchants in both towns felt the postwar slump closely. The panorama shows a community whose fortunes still depended on wheat, the river, and the rail lines that carried both out of the canyon.
