Idaho Fayoom, photographed in 1907, sat in the dry country of southern Idaho, where settlers were trying to turn the sagebrush plains along the Snake River into farmland. The Reclamation Act of 1902 and private irrigation companies were pushing canals onto new tracts, drawing homesteaders from the Midwest and other western states. Farms in the region grew grain, alfalfa, sugar beets and hay, and railroads carried these crops to outside markets. Residents would have measured their community's prospects by water rights, land prices and whether a season's harvest could pay back the heavy costs of ditches and loans.
