Colorado Springs in 1908 was a resort and health city at the foot of Pikes Peak, long known for drawing tuberculosis patients and other invalids who came for the dry, high-altitude air. The town had been founded in 1871 by William Jackson Palmer, whose Denver and Rio Grande Railroad shaped its streets and its reputation as a planned community with broad avenues and generous parks. By the time this panorama was made, hotels, sanatoriums, and the Antlers Hotel served a steady stream of visitors, while mining money from the nearby Cripple Creek district flowed through local banks and businesses. Residents of the day would have recognized the city first by its mountain backdrop and its genteel, health-seeking character.
