Mesa Verde in southwestern Colorado was barely two years old as a national park in 1908, when this panorama was taken. Theodore Roosevelt had set the land aside in June 1906 to protect the cliff dwellings that Ancestral Puebloan people built into the canyon walls and left by the late 1200s. Cowboys Richard Wetherill and Charlie Mason had reported the great ruins to the outside world in 1888, and in the years after, visitors, collectors and excavators had carried away pottery and other artifacts, which made federal protection urgent. In 1908 the region was still remote ranch and farm country, and most people who reached the ruins came by rough wagon road from nearby towns such as Mancos. The photograph shows the cliffs and dwellings as a visitor of that era would have seen them, a site people already regarded as one of the country's great archaeological wonders.
