Balcony House sits in an alcove on the cliffs of Soda Canyon in Mesa Verde, southwestern Colorado, and by 1918 it had been a federal park site for about twelve years. Congress had set aside Mesa Verde in 1906 to protect the cliff dwellings and mesa-top ruins left by Ancestral Puebloan families, who had lived in the region several centuries earlier. Visitors in this period usually reached the park by wagon or automobile from the nearby towns of Mancos and Durango, then climbed ladders and footholds cut into the rock to reach the ruin itself. The United States was still fighting in Europe that year, and the park drew only a small number of visitors, many of them archaeologists, tourists, and local residents curious about the ruins.
