Boulder, Colorado, in 1908 was a foothills college town of a few thousand people, sitting where Boulder Creek leaves the mountains onto the plains about 25 miles northwest of Denver. The University of Colorado, founded in 1876, drew students from across the state and gave the town much of its character, while surrounding farms, orchards, and irrigated fields supplied its markets. Summer brought crowds to the Colorado Chautauqua on the mesa above town, a lecture and music assembly that had run since 1898 and was known throughout the region. Residents in that decade would have recognized the town by its view of the Flatirons, the sandstone slabs rising abruptly behind the business district.
