Grand Junction, Colorado, in 1908 was a railroad town at the meeting point of the Colorado and Gunnison rivers, where two rail lines had converged in the early 1880s. Its economy rested on the irrigated Grand Valley, where canal water turned the surrounding mesa benches into orchards of peaches, apples, and pears that were shipped out by rail. Fruit growing drew settlers and seasonal labor, and the town's streets, stores, and packing houses depended on the trains that carried crops to eastern markets. Residents of the period knew the place as the commercial center of western Colorado's fruit country, a valley town whose prosperity followed the water ditches and the rail schedule.
