Garden of the Gods sits just west of Colorado Springs, where red sandstone fins tilt upward against the foothills of the Front Range. By 1908 the town had grown from its 1871 founding as a planned resort and railroad community into a city that drew visitors for its dry, sunny climate and its views of Pikes Peak. Tourism and health seekers, including many people who came to the high, clear air for their lungs, supported hotels, boarding houses, and carriage and rail trade. Residents of the period knew the formations as a natural park on the edge of town, a place for Sunday outings, picnics, and horseback rides. The photograph records that open landscape as it was then, before later roads and crowds reshaped the approach.
