Palisade, Colorado, sat in the Grand River Valley in 1908, when the Colorado River still went by the name Grand River in local usage. The town's economy rested on fruit, especially peaches, grapes, and apples grown on irrigated orchards watered by canals drawn from the river. Growers shipped their crops by rail through nearby Grand Junction to markets farther east, so the valley's prosperity depended on the rail line as much as on the soil. A panoramic view of the valley would have shown a community whose orchards, ditches, and bluffs were the basis of its identity, and whose residents measured their year by the harvest and the water supply.
