In 1908 Pikes Peak rose over a Colorado Springs that had grown well beyond its resort origins, with much of its wealth now tied to the gold fields of Cripple Creek, about 35 miles to the west. Mining investors and brokers kept offices in town, and the district's output in the early 1900s made Colorado Springs a financial center for the camps. The Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway, known locally as the cog railway, had carried visitors to the summit for more than fifteen years, so the peak was a day trip as much as a mountain to climb. Colorado College, founded in 1874, gave the city a steady academic life, and residents would have known the peak as a daily fixture of the skyline.
