By 1908, the Garden of the Gods lay just west of Colorado Springs, a town shaped by the railroads and by the health seekers drawn to its dry, high-altitude air. The park's red sandstone fins, tilted almost upright, had drawn sightseers since the 1870s, and this gateway marks the entrance where visitors drove between the rock walls. Colorado Springs in these years depended heavily on tourism, with hotels, boarding houses, and rail connections bringing in travelers who came for the scenery as much as for the climate. The formations were a source of local civic pride, and the city's leaders had a stake in keeping the grounds accessible as the town grew outward. Residents of the period would have known the place first as the gateway to that dramatic rock landscape.
