Pikes Peak, rising above Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs, was a famous destination in 1919, when this panoramic view of its summit was made. Tourists had reached the top by the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway, a cog line that opened in 1891, and by the Pikes Peak Auto Highway, completed in 1915. The mountain drew visitors from across the country, and the cities below owed much of their income to the resort trade, the Cripple Creek gold district to the west, and the wider mining economy of the region. In 1919 the country was adjusting to the end of the First World War, and the summit was still a favorite place for sightseeing and a symbol of the Front Range for the people who lived in its shadow.
