The University of Colorado at Boulder, pictured here in 1914, was then a state school of a few thousand students on a rise above a small mountain town about 25 miles northwest of Denver. Its campus grew up around Old Main, the stone administration building completed in the early 1880s, and the university was the town's largest employer and its main source of civic pride. The school was also tied to the state's wider politics, since its funding and appointments depended on the legislature in Denver, which in 1914 was wrestling with the violent coal strike in southern Colorado. Boulderites of the time would have known the campus first for its view of the Flatirons, the sandstone slabs rising behind the buildings, and for the open land stretching east toward the plains.
