In 1914 Golden remained a coal and clay town at the mouth of Clear Creek Canyon, and that spring the wider Colorado coal fields were in open conflict. Miners in the southern fields had walked out in 1913 against the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company, and in April 1914 the militia and company guards attacked the Ludlow tent colony, killing a number of strikers, women, and children. News of Ludlow reached Jefferson County mining families and the merchants who sold to them, and it sharpened local arguments over wages, company housing, and the use of state force. Golden's clay works and brickyards kept men employed on the eastern side of the mountains, even as the struggle over the coal industry unsettled the towns that depended on it.
