Golden, Colorado, in 1914 was a small city of brick storefronts and frame houses set against the foothills where Clear Creek leaves the mountains and meets the plains about 15 miles west of Denver. It had been the first territorial capital of Colorado in the 1860s, and by 1914 its economy rested on brewing, clay and brick works, and the Colorado School of Mines, which had opened there in 1874 and trained mining engineers for the state's metal and coal industries. Railroad lines and the interurban connections to Denver tied the town to the wider Front Range economy. Residents in 1914 would have known Golden as a college and brewing town, and the state's labor unrest that year, including the coal field strikes in southern Colorado, was a reminder that the region's wealth still depended on hard extraction work.
