Montrose, Colorado, in 1909 was a farm and railroad town on the edge of the Uncompahgre Valley, where settlers depended on irrigation to grow crops in the dry high country. That year the federal Reclamation Service's Gunnison Tunnel, a long bore driven through Vernal Mesa to carry Gunnison River water to the valley's fields, was nearing completion after years of digging from both ends. Orchards, alfalfa, and grain were the valley's main hopes, and local residents expected the water to turn sagebrush land into productive farms and draw more families to town. The tunnel was among the most ambitious federal irrigation works of its day, and people in Montrose followed its progress closely.
