In 1909 the Continental Divide in Colorado was known to the people who lived and worked along it as the line that sent snowmelt either east toward the Atlantic or west toward the Pacific. Mining and railroads gave the high country its economic life. Silver and gold camps had boomed and faded in the decades before, and rail lines such as the Denver & Rio Grande and the Colorado Midland had pushed their grades over the mountain passes to carry ore, timber, and passengers. Denver, the state's largest city, called itself the "Mile High City," and visitors came up into the mountains for the scenery and the cool summers.
